Too Pretty to Toss: Making a Christmas Card from Scraps

Sometimes great projects start with leftovers from other projects!

I don’t know about you, but I often end up with a handful of scraps that are just too pretty to throw away. And really, who doesn’t love finding a way to use up those lovely little bits?

I had some leftover watercolour scraps from another project, and I’d been wanting to try my Altenew Festive Triangles foil plates for a while. Why not put the two together?
Cardmaking Tip: Watercolour backgrounds add beautiful visual texture and interest to die-cut elements. Try using them wherever you’d normally reach for plain coloured cardstock!
To create this card, I foiled the tree patterns from the Festive Triangles plates onto my watercolour scraps in gold, then fussy cut the tree shapes.

Next, it was time to build my colour palette. The trees had lots of lovely coral and pinky-orange tones, so I pulled out my cardstock swatches to find a complementary colour. One shade immediately sang to me, and I knew it would make the perfect background. I cut a panel from Simple Stories Color Vibe cardstock (in Peacock) to bring out the warmth in the trees.

The composition needed a frame, and I love the botanical tendrils of the Spellbinders [embossing folder name]. I embossed a white linen panel, then die cut a capsule-shaped opening for the trees to peek through.

To bring out the embossed texture and tie the white panel into the background, I lightly inked its edges with [Distress colour]. That little touch of colour helps connect the layers and makes the whole design feel more cohesive.

Finally, it was time to choose a sentiment! I decided to echo the gold foil on the trees, bringing a touch of gold to both the foreground and background. I foiled a sentiment banner using [name] on white cardstock, then layered it over two additional banner strips in [blue] for a little extra dimension.

I love how it turned out! A handful of pretty scraps became a lovely, slightly vintage-inspired Christmas card. The colours might not be traditional Christmas shades, but I think they work beautifully together.

Your turn! Do you save those little scraps that are too pretty to throw away? I’d love to hear how you put yours to use. Have you ever turned a leftover piece into the star of a project?
